The Rookie is an American crime drama television series created for ABC by Alexi Hawley. Based on true events, the series follows John Nolan, a forty-year-old man, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. The series is produced by ABC Studios and Entertainment One.

The series stars Nathan Fillion, Afton Williamson, Eric Winter, Melissa O'Neil, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin, Alyssa Diaz, and Mercedes Mason. In October 2017, The Rookie received a series order from ABC and was premiered on October 16, 2018.

Premise Edit

The series follows John Nolan, a forty-year-old man, who moves from his comfortable, small town life to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. He must navigate the dangerous, humorous and unpredictable world of a "young" cop, determined to make his second shot at life count.

Development Edit

The Rookie was created by former Castle producer Alexi Hawley. On October 26, 2017, the show landed on ABC with a straight-to-series order commitment, with Hawley serving as writer and executive producer. Mark Gordon from Entertainment One were also announced as executive producers.

On May 9, 2018, the show was officially picked up to series as well as A Million Little Things, and was announced to be co-produced by ABC Studios and Entertainment One.

Casting Edit

Casting for the main cast started in October 2017 with Nathan Fillion, and ended the next year with Mercedes Mason in February 2018.

Filming Edit

Shooting for the pilot took place in March 7 to March 30, 2018, in Los Angeles. It was directed by Liz Friedlander who signed on to direct and also serves as executive producer for the series in January 2018.
